Reynolds Shuts Down Huskies

Storrs,  CT -- (Sports Network) - Scottie Reynolds posted a career-high 40 points to lead the Villanova Wildcats to a 78-74 victory over the Connecticut Huskies in a Big East Conference tilt. Curtis Sumpter netted 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Wildcats (20-9, 8-7 Big East), who have won two in a row, while Mike Nardi added 12 points.

Fun at the Rutgers Game Watch

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) -Scottie Reynolds made six 3-pointers and scored 25 points as Villanova beat Rutgers 74-51 on Saturday.

Curtis Sumpter scored 13 points, Dante Cunningham 12 and Mike Nardi 11 for the Wildcats (19-9, 7-7 Big East), who snapped a two-game losing streak.

Villanova jumped out to a 13-2 lead and was never really threatened. Rutgers missed its first eight shots and managed just two free throws in the first eight minutes.

Reynolds' fifth 3-pointer gave the Wildcats a 39-16 lead with 3:36 remaining in the first half. On the Wildcats' final possession of the first half, Reynolds took the inbounds pass and dribbled the length of the floor for a layup as time expired for a 45-18 advantage.

Rutgers never got closer than 21 points the rest of the way.

Marquis Webb scored 12 points and JR Inman had 14 rebounds for Rutgers (10-18, 3-12), which lost its third straight. The Scarlet Knights, who did not qualify for the Big East Tournament, close their regular season with a home game against Notre Dame on Saturday.

Rutgers was held under 60 points for the 16th time this season.

Holy War: Villanova v. St Joe's

Villanova Viewpoint is an oustanding weblog for Wildcat hoops junkies.  Last year, the author posted a History of the "Holy War"; the rivalry between the good guys and the Hawks.

"The lack of interest is even more surprising, in light of the fact that starting with the 1958 game, every single VU/SJU game attracted a sellout or near-sellout crowd at the Palestra, with the high attendance continuous for all games since then, regardless of venue"

While the Cats enjoy a lopsided record against the Hawks, every victory is a gritty Big Five contest.  The Villanovans in San Diego will be watching the game this Tuesday at Players Sports Bar in Kearny Mesa at 4PM.  I hope to see you there.

Villanova fades down stretch again

PHILADELPHIA - For the second time in three days, Villanova had a nationally ranked team on the ropes. And for the second straight game the Wildcats failed to put that nationally ranked foe away.

That's life in the rugged Big East, where every game is a war and no lead is safe.

SOUTH BEND | Notre Dame's Big East Conference game with Villanova was on the line with over a minute left and Luke Harangody was prepared to do anything possible to help the Fighting Irish earn the victory.

The former Andrean star sacrificed his body by making a key defensive play against Wildcats point guard Scottie Reynolds when he poked the ball away and teammate Colin Falls scooped it up and drove in for a critical layup.

Reluctant Rookie Grows Into Big Role

SOUTH BEND -- Someone he leans on for leadership didn't look well enough to do much of anything one morning last month, so Villanova guard Scottie Reynolds realized he would have to help.

It helped the freshman find a comfort zone he has yet to relinquish.

Hours before a Big East basketball home game against DePaul on Jan. 6, Villanova senior Mike Nardi was fighting a losing battle with the flu. He would have chills one minute and be sweating the next. His skin was pale, his muscles weak. He also vomited in the locker room before tip-off. Several Wildcats also were ill that week in early January, but there remained a conference game to be played.
